I Got Heart

I was looking through the reviews of some Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfics when I stumbled on one story in particular. It was called "Detours" and it was by a girl named Arekisu. Now, the story wasn't bad, it was just different. However, people these days in the fanfiction world are really starting to dislike anything out-landish and creative. So was said in one girls review of the story, which I thought was a long overdue rant. ^-^

~I would just like to say to all those people who go and bash other peoples stories:

If you don't like the story, why are you reading it? Keep your opinions to yourself! If you have a suggestion, fine, tell your suggestion. If you want to tell them to leave this site forever and stop their desperate attempts, take your own advice! I haven't seen you winning any Newberry awards yet! What is this website called again? Oh, thats right! If I want to hook random characters up with OCs, FINE! Let me do so! If I want to make Sokka and Zuko do a singing duet in Time Square, WHO WILL GIVE A CRAP!? It's their story; let them do what they want! Are you publishing the story? I dont think so! This is online for the writers entertainment, not ours. If you read it, that's up to you! No one wants your mindless attitude on this! Its just a story! Is it happening on the TV show? I dont see any hybrids running around the Fire Nation, so keep the nonsense to yourself. Nobody gives two craps about your fanfiction propaganda; keep that senseless information to yourself. And who gives two craps about the style of writing? Look at the C. S. Lewis: No offence to him, but the man writes like he speaks, yet he's won England's highest mark for childrens literature. And look at the writer of the Roswell novels. She SUCKS beyond borders and yet her book got turned into a TV show! So the next time you go and say this story sucks, tell that to the writers of Avatar. Fanfiction exercises our first amendment and we dont need some neo-yuppy scumbag to tell us that we can't imagine. Any thats what you flamers are lacking: IMAGINATION!! I mean, come on! The stupid insignia for fanfiction tells us to "Unleash our imagination and free our souls". And thats just exactly what these writers are doing. Leave the fanfiction folk alone! Fanfiction was for the psychotic fans who like to invent stuff for the characters, not for the serious writers. If you want serious writing, go pay fifty bucks to read stories on fanstory. com, or whatever the heck that stupid sights called. Learn about karma! One of these days, youre going to get an F on a creative writing assignment because it lacked imagination and grammar and I'm going to be standing right behind you with a bucket of popcorn and laughing my head off while seasoning my popcorn with your tears! You're turning into the neo-yuppies bent on destroying the Christmas spirit from Christmas! You mindless zombie piece of crap. Go stab yourself TWICE! Choke on some paper and die!

Leave us fanfiction folk alone! Go and make fun of the fanstory people! And just so you know where I'm coming from, I know I suck, dont bother reading my story, because I'm sure to have many syntax errors. All this muffling of the creative mind could silence a voice, and when you hear on the news that someone killed themselves after taking the advice of a flame, I hope thats yours!

When I read this I felt so happy that somebody else felt the same way I do. I mean, I may not like Mary Sues and dumb plots or OOC fanfics from time to time, but if I don't like it I just won't read it. It's not a fanfic for me, but someone out there will probably like it like no other. Hence, the reason for fanfiction. It's there to satisfy someone's thirst for diversity and creativity. If you just want normal, stick to the story and change nothing type of fanfiction well then what's the point? If it's going to be exactly the same why bother with fanfiction?

Anyways, there's these people outh there who think they're doing people a service by "misting" these fics, which basically means they're making fun of them. No point in it, just mindless comments on how horrible a fic is by making fun of it and expecting the person to take it. These are their reasons to which they justify what they're doing, taken from the sites FAQ ...

-What is a MiST?

MiST (aka MST and MST3K), stands for Mystery Science Theater 3000, a show that used to mock terrible movies by having a group of comedians make quips/jokes about it while it played. Sorta like the guys who sit in the back of the movie theater. We do the same thing, only we mock bad fics by interjecting our own commentary.


-Isn’t that kinda like flaming?

Yes and no. Yes in that it’s not helpful to the writer, and mostly is there to make fun of the fic. No in that it’s all meant to be in good humor. Just joking around. We’re not here to earnestly hurt anyone–this is all done in good humor. Unfortunately, not everyone takes it that way.

We’re sorry you feel that way. But, please realize: Not everyone will like you/your friend’s fics. If you are too much of an immature wuss that you can’t handle your fic being made fun of, then you have no business posting your fic on public domain, where it can be seen by all.


-You guys are complete bastards. You might not realize it, but your MiSTings hurt authors. Do you know how painful it is to see your fic being made into a laughing stock?

As we said before, if you can’t take the heat, don’t post your fic. Look, in the real world, authors face rejection and ridicule ALL THE TIME. Really, you can’t expect to post your fics on the internet, where it can be seen by everyone, and actually *expect* them ALL to be showered in praise. Especially if what you wrote was crap. Blow your nose and get over it.


-But these writers AREN’T “real authors”! They’re just kids trying to express themselves! Do you want ficcers to stop writing?

WE’RE just kids expressing ourselves too! And anyone who stops writing just because a bunch of nerds with too much time on their hands had fun with their fic should have never started writing in the first place. Get over it.

Great. You’re entitled to feel that way. It’s a free domain. Just keep in mind we’re entitled to the option of mocking you and posting it for the world to see.~

My own thoughts: Well, I understand that people have to be prepared to be critized when they post something for everyone to see, but that still doesn't justify this kind of bashing in a "good humor" front. It's not like an actual respectable author is making fun of you (which they never would, they would just give you suggestions on how to improve your writing and to keep trying), instead it's only young kids like yourself who are in the same boat yourself. This seriously makes no sense to me, only that it's meant to either force these poor kids to no longer write or to piss them off so they can make fun of them some more.

I really hope that they stop making fun of fics before things out of control ...

Anyways, I just had to get that off of my chest. I personally think that anyone should be able to write whatever crappy fic they wish to write. And what if you don't like it? Well then don't read it. That's what I've been doing since I was twelve years old and I discovered fanfics (I am currently 16.) I've read from the sickest to the dumbest, to the worst fanfics ever written and I've appreciated every one of them for what they are -- fanfics. Although at times they do leave me asking questions I just decide to stop reading and move on to my own preference of fanfics. Like I said before, someone out there is bound to like that kind of fanfics.
